Our approach

How we intend to work with children, young people and families

Child-centred and person-centred

Children and young people should have a meaningful voice in decisions that affect their lives.

We will seek to understand each person’s strengths, goals, identity, communication style, preferences and support needs.

Trauma-informed

We understand that trauma can influence a person’s emotions, behaviour, relationships and sense of safety.

Rather than asking, “What is wrong with this person?” we seek to understand, “What may have happened, and what support does this person need to feel safe?”

Therapeutic and relationship-based

Healing often occurs through stable and dependable relationships.

Our staff will aim to be calm, consistent, respectful and emotionally available while maintaining clear professional boundaries.

Culturally safe and responsive

We respect the cultural identity, family relationships, language, community and traditions of every person we support, and recognise the importance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children maintaining connections with family, community, Country and culture.

Arising Project will seek guidance, partnerships and cultural oversight from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and community-controlled organisations.

Family and connection focused

Where it is safe and consistent with a child’s care plan, we will support meaningful relationships with parents, siblings, extended family, carers and other significant people.

Strengths based

Children and families are more than the difficulties they have experienced.

We focus on capabilities, interests, aspirations and opportunities, not just risks, behaviours or diagnoses.

Collaborative

Strong outcomes require shared responsibility. We aim to work constructively with:
